Hey guys so instead of my usual food reviews and travel recommendations, this post will be a bit more personal and slightly embarrassing because today I will be sharing about my acne, specifically about the things that worsens or alleviates the problem, as well as some products that works well for my skin.
I’ve decided to split this up into multiple posts since there are just so many things to talk about.
Just a disclaimer that I am in no way a certified dermatologists or a skin care guru, so whatever I’m sharing are just things that work for me, and hopefully it’ll work for you too.
How it all started
Back then I had this crazy idea of growing out my hair for a man bun and the length of my fringe reached up to my bottom lip. At that point of time it still wasn’t long enough to tie a proper top knot without having some excess hair falling onto my forehead so instead, I styled my hair with some hair products, specifically Distorter Clay by Hairbond.
It happened when I was in Australia. The wind there was insanely strong and blew my hair in all sorts of directions, one of them being directly into my face. Since the clay was of an oilier base, it resulted in a lot of pores on my face being clogged, and that’s how I started breaking out.
A few reasons on how my acne got worse was possibly due to the oily food in my school’s canteen, especially since I always ask the canteen vendors to 加辣 (add spicy), which is really really bad for your skin. It escalates the oil production in your face which then ends up clogging your pores.

My current skin condition
If you have relatively oilier skin and larger pores than most people then you may find this post helpful because that’s what my skin is like.
Consume healthier foods
Opting for a more balanced diet can definitely help with oily skin. I wouldn’t recommend completely cutting down on Mcdonald’s and KFC and their other accomplices, but rather, having self-control and only eating them once in a while.
Fast forward two weeks after my Australia trip, my face has already began to break out and I was panicking. In addition to the dry weather in America, I was horrified to see my skin flaking and covered in red spots.
Immediately, I started spamming OXY pimple cream on my face day and night and day and night. Initially, most of the pimples did subside, but I was left with a face full of blackheads.
Overusing strong pimple creams like OXY can facilitate the clogging of pores. Furthermore, pimple creams don’t target the root cause of the problem, so while I do recommend using it, they should be used in appropriate amounts.
Major breakout and how I managed it
For some reason, I had a huge breakout after a year. Out of nowhere, there was a splatter of small white heads concentrated on my forehead and cheeks.
It was so bad that I had to skip school for it because I was so embarrassed to be seen. Eventually, I managed to get my hands on these two products that really saved my life.
Topicil is a lincosamide antibiotic which is used to treat infections due to susceptible bacteria.DermNet NZ Website
I applied a thin layer of this on the affected area twice a day after cleansing my face. There’s a slight (but oddly satisfying) sting when using it, which I guess is a sign that it’s doing its thing.
Differin Pimple Cream
Differin regulates cell turnover to make sure your skin goes through the right process, creating a healthier environment for skin. Regulating cell turnover helps to keep the pores from clogging and target acne before it even starts. Don’t think of Differin Gel as a spot treatment only to be used when acne rears its ugly head. In fact, if used daily, Differin Gel stops new acne from forming, resulting in improved skin tone and texture.Differin Website
About a month has passed since the unfortunate incident and thankfully I was able to control the acne. Ever since then I started being more conscious about the things I do which could potentially worsen my acne, some of them including:
- Not touching my face so much
- Putting my face on the table
- Eating oily/spicy food
Going for regular facial extractions is also crucial in maintaining a clear face, especially for people with oilier skin and bigger pores like me, as we are more susceptible to growing blackheads.
Instead of squeezing them out yourselves, albeit the satisfaction (i’ve been in that position) or even using blackhead patches (it might enlarge your pores even more), I recommend going for facials to have them professionally removed to reduces the chances of further infection which could potentially worsen your acne.
I go to My Cozy Room, which is known for their painless extractions.
Of course, regular maintenance is also vital in ensuring your skin remains clear of blemishes.
To be honest some of these are probably catered to women and I wouldn’t know because I just use whatever my mom throws at me. But here is a list of cleansers that I have used in the past, including their pros and cons.
Klenskin Shower-on Sunscreen
The sun’s ultraviolet rays can increase inflammation and redness, and can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark discoloration)Web MD Website
This product has an additional sun screen function which protects your skin from harmful ultraviolet rays.
Though it is more convenient to use, since I’ll have one less product to put on my face, I personally don’t like the slightly oily feeling (probably from the built-in sunscreen) that it leaves on my skin.
BE.ST Organic Balance Cleansing Jelly
My mom prefers organic products when it comes to skin care which is why she bought this for me and my sister.
I think it does a good job in extracting the oil from skin without drying it out and I love the exfoliating feature it has. The only downside is that it takes a bit of effort to lather for it to work properly.
Click here for a more detailed review of the cleansing gel as well as the other products by BE.ST.
Bing Han Ginseng Powder Cleanser
This too has an exfoliating feature. However, compared to the organic product above, it is less effective in completely cleansing my face; sometimes I have to clean my face twice.
It also comes in powder form which makes it more troublesome to use.
docte botanical research – Hydro Cleanser
Keeping the best for last, this facial cleanser by docte works the best for my face. Just like the cleansing jelly by BE.ST, it does an excellent job in fully removing the excess oil from my face without dehydrating it. The only difference is that it is a lot easier to use this compared to the BE.ST’s cleansing jelly.
The Hydro Cleanser is perfect for those who have a delicate and sensitive skin which is prone to irritation from environmental factors.
As seen from the numerous products I have used on my face, it is evident that my skin is damn rabak. Unfortunately the story doesn’t end here so stay tuned for part 2 as I share with you the current products that I am using to get rid of my worsening acne.
